#MyPropertyStory: Cherished Possessions
Sara Giffen
As part of this year’s #MyPropertyStory campaign, WJRO is proud to partner with 80 Objects/80 Lives, a digital exhibition that brings to life the personal belongings of Holocaust survivors and refugees. These artifacts—carried, saved, or lost—serve as lasting connections to history and remembrance.
One such treasure is a menorah belonging to Sara Giffen, who was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1943. Hidden as a child in Amsterdam during the war, she later learned that her grandparents had buried belongings in their garden to protect them from being taken.
Neighbors told Sara’s mother about the hidden items, and her father, along with friends from the Dutch resistance, went to the garden at night to dig them up. Among the buried possessions, they discovered the menorah—an old and cherished artifact likely used by her family for generations.
Join us in commemorating these treasures and the stories they tell by sharing your own family’s story. Learn more and share your story at wjro.org.il/mypropertystory
