My maternal grandfather, Dr. Moise Vitan (Heim), suffered the most – he was deported to Transnistria for two years of forced labor. My grandmother’s appeal to the king of Romania, Mihai I, to free him was turned down flatly.

My paternal grandfather, Mr. Ilie Horovitz, a merchant in Piatra Neamt, was extorted of large sums of money and merchandise under the threat of violence. These are the crimes for which I have official documentation from the Holocaust Survivors and Victims Database.

But these were not the only crimes. Both parents were thrown out of high school. This had lasting damage on my mother’s life because she was unable to complete her education. My maternal grandfather was beaten up in the police station of Buzau under the pretext that he was a communist. Both parents were forced to wear a yellow badge.
